Streetwear is a subculture movement & has many influences. Going back to the 70's on the west coast, it was worn by surfers, skaters, & graffiti artists. It has heavy influences from the 90's hip-hop scene in NYC, while also being inspired by the nightlife of Japan. Streetwear is unique & ever evolving, & its origins were no different.
How it gained popularity:
Streetwear can be looked at as a phase in fashion, however, we consider it a cultural phenomenon. This is because it is unique in its growth.
